چکیده

We consider the proton structure corrections to hydrogen ground-state hyperfine structure, focusing on a state-of-the-art evaluation of the inelastic nucleon corrections—the polarizability corrections—using analytic fits to the most recent data. We find a value for the fractional correction ∆pol of 1.3 ± 0.3 ppm. This is 1–2 ppm smaller than the value of ∆pol one would deduce using hyperfine splitting data and elastic proton structure corrections obtained from modern form factor fits. In addition, we discuss the derivations of the relevant formulas, paying attention to lepton mass effects and to questions surrounding the use of unsubtracted dispersion relations. Zemach and magnetic radius of the proton from the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen

The current status of the determination of corrections to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state in hydrogen is considered. Improved calculations are provided taking into account the most recent value for the proton charge radius. Comparing experimental data with predictions for the hyperfine splitting, the Zemach radius of the proton is deduced to be 1.045(16) fm. Employing exponential pa...

Proton Structure Corrections to Hydrogen Hyperfine Splitting

The largest uncertainty in calculations of hydrogen ground-state hyperfine splitting comes from corrections due to proton stucture. We review these corrections, with special mention of the inelastic, or polarizability, corrections which have been recently re-evaluated. Summing up the arguably best current values for the calculated corrections leaves us 1–2 ppm short of the experimental data. We...

Nuclear Structure-Dependent Radiative Corrections to the Hydrogen Hyperfine Splitting

Radiative corrections to the Zemach contribution of the hydrogen hyperfine splitting are calculated. Their contributions amount to −0.63(3) ppm to the HFS. The radiative recoil corrections are estimated to be 0.09(3) ppm and heavy particle vacuum polarization shifts the HFS by 0.10(2) ppm. The status of the nuclear-dependent contributions are considered. From the comparison of theory and experi...

Proton Zemach radius from measurements of the hyperfine splitting of hydrogen and muonic hydrogen

While measurements of the hyperfine structure of hydrogen-like atoms are traditionally regarded as test of bound-state QED, we assume that theoretical QED predictions are accurate and discuss the information about the electromagnetic structure of protons that could be extracted from the experimental values of the ground state hyperfine splitting in hydrogen and muonic hydrogen. Using recent the...

Quantum electrodynamic corrections to the hyperfine structure of excited S states

State-dependent quantum electrodynamic corrections are evaluated for the hyperfine splitting of nS states for arbitrary principal quantum number n. The calculations comprise both the self-energy and the vacuumpolarization correction of order α (Z α) EF and the recoil correction of order (Z α) (m/M)EF . Higherorder corrections are summarized and partly reevaluated as well. Accurate predictions f...
